Teachapalooza/Poynter Educators Conference

July 2011

I will post my presentations and other items here for your lasting use. Please feel free to take whatever you find useful.

And remember, NewsU has put together a swank interface for you, as well, with all sorts of access to materials presented during your time here.

Delicious

This is where you will find bookmarks to all the links I tagged for you. Find useful examples for lectures, tutorials, etc.

Presentations

Facebook and Twitter for journalism and teaching (zip file you download that contains a Powerpoint version and associated media)

Tech tools to amp your teaching (Powerpoint download including media files)

Curriculum (R)evolution (Powerpoint download including media files)

Tutorials

Video tutorials I put together for my class. Those of you who are interested in learning how to cut audio and do slideshows will be interested in the Audacity and SoundSlides tutorials.

Many of you were excited about what screen capture can do for you. This tutorial page includes four videos on different screen capture products and the basics of using them.

Remember, the best way to get any tech question answered is to Google for the software plus your problem plus “tutorial,” e.g. “Windows open zip file tutorial.” You’ll find an answer almost every time.

Rubrics

We didn’t talk much about grading, but past sessions have been interested in this Excel file of multimedia grading rubrics. Feel free to adjust it for your own use if you’d like.

Course Materials

You’re welcome to syllabi, exercises, notes or anything of interest in any of my courses (warning: not all are updated in a given semester, depending on what I’m teaching):

  • J202, Mass Media Practices (that whopping 6-credit intro boot camp)
  • J417, Magazine Publishing
  • J401, In-Depth Multimedia Reporting
  • J676, Digital Media Law and Ethics
  • J697, Internship

I talked with a number of you about our 10-week incremental multimedia reporting and writing assignment. This is a great thing to read through and get ideas for incorporating multimedia into an intro-level course.

Please let me know if you need anything else.
